Surgical Technicians are allied health care professionals, who provide surgical care to the patients. Surgical technicians work under the direct supervision of surgeon to help the effective and safe conduct of intrusive surgical procedures. Surgical technicians possess proficiency in the theory as well as in the application of aseptic and sterile techniques. They combine the overall knowledge of surgical procedures, human anatomy, and implement technologies and tools to facilitate a health care professional’s performance of invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Monitoring expiration dates as well as recommending procurement of supplies and equipment for various specialties.
• Gathering appropriate supplies, equipment and instruments, checking equipment for suctioning and safety and opening sterile supplies.
• Assisting the surgical team with donning of self-gowns, surgical gowns, setting up the sterile field, assisting with draping the accounts and patient for all the surgical items.
• Maintaining and controlling all surgical supplies and equipment.
• Assisting in preparing operative site and assisting with the safe and proper positioning of patient on the table.
• Assisting in the patient’s transportation both to and from the operating room.
• Operating safely gas and steam autoclaves, electrical, and mechanical equipment.
• Passing instruments, supplies, and sutures to operative teams for any surgical specialty.

Skills and Specifications

• Knowledge of recognition of surgical instruments, and their storage, care, and sterilization.
• Knowledge base of Operating Room equipment.
• Ability to work independently as well as a part of a team.
• Ability to use scientific methods and rules to solve complex problems.
• Proficient oral and written communication skills.

Education and Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent in surgical technology related field.
• Certification in surgical technology from an accredited institution.
