Automotive Body Paint Technician Job Profile and Description

Automotive Paint Technicians or Paint Spraying Specialists are classed as Transportation Equipment Painters.  They work either to repaint and refinish overhauled or damaged vehicles in body repair shops and service centers or work in auto manufacturing plants performing one of the last aesthetic and functional touches on a commercial vehicle before finally rolling out the assembly line. This is the application of anti-corrosive primers and paint coats.

Automotive Body Paint Technician Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate or tend paint spraying or bathing machines that paint and refinish surfaces of automobiles in a body repair shop or manufacturing plant
  • Dispose toxic or hazardous chemical waste from the painting process.
  • Apply paint coats in accordance with company specifications
  • Operate automated painting machines to dip the car body into anti-corrosion bath treatment before applying color paint coats.
  • Apply clear paint coats as final finishing to protect body color.
  • Mix paints to match required boy color specifications or car’s original colors if only sections are to be painted after body repair.
  • Observe health safety by wearing prescribed protective masks, breathing apparatus and uniforms during and direct paint spraying process.
  • Observe work shift schedules to achieve maximum work productivity
  • Attend and participate in shop floor productivity and quality improvement programs.

Automotive Body Paint Technician Summary of Qualification

  • Must have above average comprehension skills to follow medium complexity instructions in car body pain coating and spraying procedures, whether manual or automated.
  • Must have above average communication and interpersonal skills.

Automotive Body Paint Technician Education and Qualifications

  • A high school diploma is basic as the skills are learned with on-the-job training.
  • An associate in Industrial Technology or automotive technology is an advantage.

The median hourly wages for Automotive Body Paint Technicians employed in car repair shops are in line with most transport equipment painters which in 2009 stood at  $17.86 per hour.  The middle 50% received between $14.00 and $24.10 an hour with the lowest 10% earning around $11.31 and the highest 10% earning about  $29.93 an hour. Median hourly wages was $26.61 in motor vehicle manufacturing plants.
