A dean of student is in charge of directing and coordinating student programmes of colleges or universities. He is responsible for formulating and developing student personnel policies and has to advise the different staff members on issues connected with policy, programme and administration.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • A dean of student has to direct and help in planning various social, recreational and curricular programmes within and outside the university campus
  • He has to counsel or advise students, teachers and groups on matters relating to their personal problems, educational and vocational goals, social or recreational activities and also financial assistance
  • He has to study and review reports of student misconduct cases that may require disciplinary action on his part to ensure recommendations conform to university policies
  • He must sponsor and guide student organizations
  • He needs to plan, develop and review the budget and directs appropriations of student services unit
  • He is the representative of the university in the community on matters related to student personnel program and activities
  • A dean may also directly take classes and teach
  • He may direct admissions, arrange foreign student services, health services, be in charge of student unions, and testing services

Education and Qualifications

This is the most prestigious post in the field if education. A dean of student must have at least a master’s degree in a particular subject, and most even have doctoral degrees. They must possess minimum 10 years of teaching experience to become the dean of an educational institute.
