Student counselor Job Profile and Description

A student counselor plays a very important role in any educational institution. He may not be directly involved with teaching, but gives advice and guidance to students about their personal or academic life. As students are also increasingly under stress these days, counselors help them deal with the pressures of life and they have someone to talk to. A counselor is, in other words, in charge of monitoring the overall psychological growth of the students.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • A student counselor guides students regarding their career decisions and helps them to understand their potential and ways to pursue their goals
  • He helps them understand their skill sets and how to utilize them
  • He also gives information about colleges and universities and what is required to get admission in them
  • He also advises students on their personal problems and helps to resolve them
  • If it is something very serious, he involves the parents and the school authorities, and together they help the child
  • He recognizes behavioral issues and provides solutions to tackle them
  • He holds sessions with students identified by teachers as ‘problem children’ and tries to understand their troubles and advises them
  • He may also have to mediate if there is an argument between the student and the college authorities

Skills and Specifications

  • He must be sympathetic to the problems of the student and must be a good listener
  • He must have excellent communication skills in order to be able to reach out to the troubled students
  • He should keep himself updated on the recent developments in the academic world in order to be able to give the students advice about their career

Education and Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in child psychology is required to understand and deal with the children. One may also enroll in some college-specific counseling programme.
