Economist Job Profile and Description

Economists are basically financial scientists whose firm understanding of the economic forces taking place in a region or country is greatly valued by politicians, industrialists and consumers.   Employed in government financial agencies, Federal Reserve banks, stock exchanges, economic think tanks and large corporations, economists conduct regular researches to identify trends and formulate forecast models that greatly assist governments in adopting economic policies and enterprises in developing products and services

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct continuing research on GNP/GDP elements, population growth and shift trends, currency movements, consumer spending trends, housing developments, durable goods production, import and export trends and other factors that determine economic health of a nation.
  • Develop econometric models that can forecast economic behavior and patterns
  • Analyze local and global macro and micro economic activities to determine sustainable growth and advise decision makers on adopting the prudent fiscal policies to manage and stimulate economic activities
  • Examine problems related to the economic activity of individual companies
  • Forecast production and consumption of renewable resources and the supply, consumption and depletion of non-renewable resources

Skills and Specifications

  • Must have the ability to see the big picture or macro-economics while having the eye for details in analyzing micro-economics.
  • Must have high level of patience to delve into deeper levels of analysis
  • Must be able to work under high pressure, long work hours and  a high deal of computational accuracy
  • Must be able to comply with deadlines and work under pressure
  • Must have strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact with high level decision makers

Education and Qualifications

The position requires a college degree in economics and business management with a good training in statistics and econometrics.  A post graduate education in business administration and economics is an advantage, as well as an experience working in market analyst and accounting firms or a similar position in another company.
