Sales Manager Job Profile and Description

A sales manager is responsible for supervising a sales team, which introduces customers to new products and services, thereby helping the company register profits and make its business more successful. He is in charge of setting sales targets and ensuring that those targets are met by sales executives within the stipulated time.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Every sales manager is responsible for a particular geographical area and has to make sure that the sales teams working there are meeting the target numbers
  • He consults the senior management and has to set up objectives and goals, and a plan of action about how to achieve them
  • He must be in touch with clients and also build new relations with potential clients
  • He should be able to identify potential customers and their needs and expand his base by bringing in new customers
  • He has to work closely with other departments, especially the marketing and accounts department, to figure out an effective sales strategy that will boost sales
  • He has to set a budget and ensure that all the work takes place without exceeding the budget
  • He has to submit regular reports on the progress of the sales team and is also responsible for their appraisal
  • He has to follow market and customer information and on future buying trends

  • A sales manager needs to have exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
  • He must be persuasive, well-mannered and have good negotiation skills
  • He needs to motivate his team and must be a good leader
  • He must be good with numbers

Education and Qualifications

In order to be a sales manager one needs to have a commerce background. One can also go for a bachelor’s or master’s degree in business management with specialisation in sales and marketing.
