The vice-president (VP) of sales is directly responsible for a company’s revenue and has to supervise, motivate and manage all the sales teams to boost the company’s profits. A VP of sales is in charge of a specified area, region, state or national region, and for bigger companies, even continents.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • The VP of sales is responsible for directing and managing all sales and business development operations
  • He must keep track of what the competitors of the company are doing, and also be aware of pricing, compensation, and distribution
  • He has to set, develop and implement strategies for business development
  • He is in charge of driving the company’s achievement of its customer acquisition and revenue goals
  • He looks after the hiring and development of a sales organization, depending on the size of the company
  • He is also responsible for training and sales incentive programs
  • He has to development and evaluate national and international sales strategies
  • He must coordinate with the marketing department to establish and direct channel and distribution programs
  • He has to build key customer relationships and implement strategies for expanding the company’s customer base.
  • He manages the overall sales process and develops the pricing policies

Skills and Specifications

  • The VP of sales must have excellent leadership skills, so that he can be a role model for the employees and motivate them
  • He must have very good communication skills, both written and verbal
  • He must have good analytical and networking skills
  • He should have basic knowledge of technology

Education and Qualifications

In order to be a VP of sales one needs to have an MBA with specialisation in sales and marketing. Since it is a senior position one must have some experience to reach this position.
